The middle bullet would of had a wood plug in the bottom, and could be loaded faster and more times then the minnie ball. When fired the wood plug would puss forward and expain the bullet to fit the barrel. It was more accurate than the minnie. You take tge paper cartridge open the bottom pour the powder in the barrel, them turn it around cause bullets upside down. Push bullet in barrel tire off paper, cause it lubed and it took little effort to load, unlike the mimmie which after a few shots got hard to load.

I received a K98 from the family of a US GI who was present at the D Day landing, and there were two bayonet, one ser no 4213 C, with most of the bluing still present... some very basic corrosion, but not terrible... obviously period correct for the 1941 K98 with all matching numbers. The second bayonet is twice the length... looking for information on that one as it's obviously for the k98, but pre 1915.

Just as a quick little addition. I have a 1943 AFH with 2 unique variants. 1) It is a cut down version of a 1905. The fuller goes all the way to the point (as you describe) and there is No other stamp on it other than the UC stamp on the catch. I "assume" the bayonet was produced in early 1943, not placed in circulation and then reground to conform to the March 4, 1943 Army Ordinance requirements. 2) ALSO it does not have a Bakelite grip. It has the "red grip" produced by CPP: Columbus Plastic Products, Columbus, Ohio. Columbus Plastic CPP made two types of the red CAB grips, the earlier plain type and the second with a re-enforcement plate in the left grip in the area of the screw hole when the first type proved to be prone to cracking in that area. I have the second version with the re-enforcement plate. Another collectible item - the grips and bayonet was 1 of about 100,000 produced by AFH. The red grip Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (commonly called CAB) was allowed as an alternative material to Bakelite. After some time in field use, it was reported that CAB was not resistant to the solvents used to de-grease the bayonets in the field and would dissolve the grips. About 100,000 CAB grips were manufactured before they were discontinued due to this problem in April 1943. From available evidence, it appears that most of these grips were used by AFH, So the bayonet I have survived thru time from early 1943 and now fits perfectly on my M1 Garand. All of this information can be found on Gary Cunningham's web page "bayonet points #23". Sorry for the long reply. Great video.

Love these - they’re very collectible. Another notable difference between wartime and postwar variants is the medal in the centre. The soldier tends to be leaning further forwards in examples from the 50s onward, with his budenovka being under the T rather than the C. His foot is also turned out towards our left more, whereas wartime variants have his foot pointing towards us. The lettering I believe also changed slightly, although that may have just came with newer award regulations ( no longer wearing the red star at every moment)

This video is a wealth of information, and you helped me on these when I was getting my feet wet on their understanding. One of the best sources on these on the internet. Currently have 3 matching examples, two of which have 70% of their original bluing. Fantastic items to collect. I'd say this one most likely left the factory in this configuration. Its very unlikely they'd be mismatched so close together by a random hand coincidentally. It was pretty common for left over stock to have been used in mass manufacturing.

From my understanding, Iwo Jima and Okinawa were the only battles that had 3 Marine Divisions take part in at once. For Iwo Jima, that is a lot of logistics for A LOT of Marines, and logistics needed to know who was landing where. The Marine Corps leadership had learned from previous battles such as Peleliu and Tarawa how chaotic the beaches could be on the first day; with a battalion/regiment's ammo/supplies being deposited where it wasn't supposed to be, in addition to Marines from different regiments overlapping and veering off from objectives. (The Army was able to wear shoulder patches on their jackets to distinguish them, the Marine Corps didn't). The Marine Corps still kind of operates this way. During big exercises where there is overlapping Battalions or Regiments, one unit will wear woodland cammies and the other desert cammies to tell who is who. The Army will just wear a patch.

Awesome. Love this type of stuff. Was given a inert api "trainer" 20mm by my grandfather he got as a gift from working for lockheed decades ago, and that started my fascinating with projectiles. I began messing with my red rider shortly there after, trying to find ways to make better "ammo" for it hahaha, eventually got into reloading, casting, milling various rounds as i aged for my firearms. Its a hobby i love. I love display artillery shells for some reason, sadly i only have one, as i havent been able to justify more. I still have that lil 20 trainer, attached to my "bullet board"(cartridge display) that i love showing folks, especially the cutaways or the "exploded" dioramas, always a favorite. Its funny how a series of meaningless events shapes out obsessions. Anyways, very much enjoyed the series, well done.
